Amazing Plant

— Rama Thoopal

Ancient Mexicans got clean, drinking water by boiling the nopal cactus (prickly pear cactus), a commonly found edible cactus. The juice of the cactus caused gritty particles in the water to sink to the bottom, leaving the water at the top fairly clean. The process was tedious and produced small amounts of drinking water.
A team of scientists, who were studying the effectiveness of this technique separated the cactus juice into two parts : liquid and gel, and found the gel to be extremely effective. It could not only cleanse the water of dirt in under 5 minutes but also remove harmful chemicals like arsenic. Now they are planning to set up the first cactus cleansing system in a small Mexican town where the cactus grows in abundance.
